Codes of Ethics that Rock!!

 Hey Cool Cats!

I wanted to start of this blog by calling you all cool cats because well, I am fostering to adorable baby kittens so I have cats on the brain. That really has nothing to do with anything I just thought I would share because right now one is sitting on my toes.

So this week we had to look at two codes of ethics for NAEYC and The Division for Early Childhood. Now after reading these codes there are several things I can share about their ideals that rock my socks off. However, I will stick with the assigned three, because baby kitties need lots of love and attention!

N.A.E.Y.C.

Ideal One:
To recognize and respect the unique qualities, abilities, and potential of each child.

As an early childhood professional sometimes when you work with a lot kids at once it is real easy to forget how different they really are! However this is a HUGE mistake, because, it is important to know exactly what you say is going to effect the child you are working with!!!!

Ideal Two:
To appreciate the vulnerability of children and their dependence on adults.

Why it in fact rocks my socks:
The child/ children you are working with depend on you greatly. It is unethical to forget this fact because if you forget this fact you cannot fully understand your responsibillity.

Ideal Three:
We shall be familiar with the risk factors for and symptoms of child abuse and neglect, including physical, sexual, verbal, and emotional abuse and physical, emotional, educational, and medical neglect. We shall know and follow state laws and community procedures that protect children against abuse and neglect.

Why it in fact rocks my socks:
Abuse is a HUGE deal and if someone can catch it it can save the child from a whole world of future issues.

D.E.C.

Ideal One:
We shall demonstrate the highest standards of personal integrity, truthfulness, and honesty in all
our professional activities in order to inspire the trust and confidence of the children and families
and of those with whom we work.

Why it in fact it rocks my socks:
I believe the only to way to develop trust is to be trustworthy in every aspect of life.

Ideal Two:
We shall strive for the highest level of personal and professional competence by seeking and
using new evidence based information to improve our practices while also responding openly to
the suggestions of others.

Why it in fact it rocks my socks:
I believe that if you do not stay informed and up to date you are failing the kids you work with.

Ideal Three:
We shall serve as advocates for children with disabilities and their families and for the
Professionals who serve them by supporting both policy and programmatic decisions that
enhance the quality of their lives.

Why it rocks my Socks:
I am very passionate about helping children with disabilities because I have seen too many be ignored in a child care or school setting. So I fully agree with this statement.

  1. I like the ideal that says "We shall strive for the highest level of personal and professional competence by seeking and using new evidence based information to improve our practices while also responding openly to the suggestions of others." Some people find it hard to respond appropriately to others' suggestions, but I have found that there is value in what others say. We often need another person's viewpoint to help us see those "blind spots" that we need to work on. Plus, other people have had different experiences than we have, and they may know something we don't.
