The answers I revived on Diversity:
" Diversity is the differences we have in our backgrounds." - My Co- Worker
"Diversity is when you have a mix of people. They all have different beliefs and skin colors." - My Friend
"Diversity is a term that ends up causing more notice to everyone's differences." - My Co- Teacher
The definitions of Culture:
"Culture is where you come from." - My Co-Worker
"Culture is not definable. It is not easily put into words." - My Friend
" Culture is a person and families background." - My Co-Teacher
What I learned:
I would say these answers have a lot to do with what I have learned. One more then the others. This is my friends definition of culture. I agree that culture is not easy to define. In the video we watched the second week, all the women talked about was how culture is made up of so many things that it is hard to define and describe.
Many things were omitted from the definitions. For example in the definitions many things were over looked in diversity. They mentioned the obvious like skin and language difference make up diversity but did not think of things like differences in job choices and ways of thinking. I know I didn't either before this course.
By thinking about others definitions it has really helped me define my definitions. I have also realized how far I have come and how much I have learned from this course.
I agree with you and your friend. Culture is not easy to define and is quite complex. I also believe that diversity is just as hard to define as it is also quite complex. It is really good when you look back and see how far you have personally come and are still learning. I am of the belief that if we pay enough attention to those around us and really listen – we will learn something new each and every day.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
I agree that culture is very hard to define because it is influenced by so many factors. Some people include race or gender, while others do not put them in the top 10 of defining characteristics. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI agree completely that culture is hard to defined. When asking the definitions, I noticed that everyone took more time thinking about the definition of culture than diversity. There is so much that goes into culture that someone could go on for quite some time to include everything! I found it interesting as well with how much we have already learned in just three weeks. It was hard for me not to share what I thought the defintions were before they could answer. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Hailey,
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting that your co-teacher said that diversity ends up causing more notice to pople's differences. While that's true, it seems as though she sees looking at diversity as a negative thing or something that may cause trouble. While I see her point of view, there are times when ignoring it can have negative consequences. It's amazing how much we've learned about aspects of culture and diversity so far in our class.
