Creating Art

Adams (2000) Stated " We are socialized by people we love and trust and taught to play our roles and follow the rules."  This is the main thing I learned in this course that I will forever take with me. This is what I focused on in my art and that is our biases never hold truth but are bred in us from a young age. As an educator I want to break some of these biases at a young age.

When I began to think about what type of art I wanted to create, I realized, I wanted to create two that make up one. The first is my word art, representing the main thing I wanted to take away from this class and the biases I want my classroom to dispel. The second is a photo art using photos found on the internet to represent the beauty and complexity of  our truly diverse society. I also used a quote that I think sums up the truth about diversity. We are all put into boxes because of stereotypes but at the end of the day we are just limiting ourselves and those around us.

  1. Hailey,
Wonderful post. I love the posters to hang in your room. My son, Noah, started school this week and at the Back-to-School night I overheard several Dads talking about how their boys will not be playing in "the kitchen" play area during playtime. How ridiculous. Kids will play with other kids and it does not matter what they are playing. My kids do play differently, but they are encouraged to play in their preferred style and with the toys that they like despite society's judgement. Great posts!

  2. Hailey, I love this post! The word art that you presented sums up everything that we have learned so far. I think that it is a great reminder of the stereotypes that people may have and how we need to remember to not hold children to them! I also like the pledge that you made and I think this would be a fun activity to do with children after talking about diversity and biasness.

  3. Hailey,
I love the post and the quote by Einstein. He was truly a magnificent man. I believe the message within the quote. Everyone has a talent that is all theirs. I think that this talent has to be nourished by allowing our children to grow into themselves by asking questions and interacting with people who aren't like them. I appreciate the creativity that you showed in your artwork. Great job.
