The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression

Since the beginning of this class, I feel like I have seen more and more incidents of mircoaggression with in my own life. It is funny how learning a subject can open your eyes to a whole new world. Recently I was watching a TV show that really made me think about the true effects of biases. In this show, an African American man was killed for dating a white woman. But that did not come out at first.

At first you found out that this man was a firefighter who was hazed for being black but it was all through mircoaggression.

The biases in this incident made it so this man had to constantly prove he should be a part of the firehouse in ways white men did not. The other man of color in the house went along with the hazing but the man who was later killed did not. He fought the system and paid for it with his life. Even though this incident was fictional, it brought up a lot of emotion for me because it made me see just how far hidden biases can go and how horribly they can destroy lives.

The men in the house could of realized and then dealt with their biases instead of keeping them hidden this could of saved the man’s life it would also allow equity to be a part of the firehouse.

  1. What a sad story. I just watched the show "School Ties" and thought about all the subtle and of course not so subtle forms of microaggression. Great post!!!

  2. I too have felt the same way about microaggression. It has been very interesting to see unintentional biases come from someone. I wonder now if the words they are saying are conscious or unconscious.
I also watched a television show that showed prejudice and bias. I hope one day, those biases and prejudices will disappear off the television and in society. Great post!
