For this assignment, I am pretending my program director just told me we are having a family from the country of Chad will be coming to our center and their two year old son will be in my class.
Five things to do to prepare-
1- First things first, I will head to the library and do my research, I will do Google searches and talk to people who know the culture.
2- I will find out what language they speak as a family, Chad has two official languages. I will learn as much as I can so I can communicate basic things with the family.
3- It may be hard to find someone from Chad, but I will find someone who speaks the same language to help translate whatever I can not learn. I have friends who speak both of the official languages (Arabic and French), So I will also have them help me translate newsletters and such.
4- I will find pictures from Chad to put in my room to help the child feel apart of the class.
5- I will try to go to the source. In other words before the child begins I will sit down with the family and find out from them about there culture and find ways to incorporate what I learn into the class.
My hope is that these preparations will make this huge transition a tad easier for the student. While it may still take a lot of adjusting, I am hoping he will still know he is a welcome part of the class.
